Chart Beat Podcast: Z100 New York Programmer Mark Medina & Justin Bieber's Historic Sales Week

The boss of the biggest top 40 radio station in the U.S. shares insights. Plus, Bieber bests prior stars who achieved notable domination on the Digital Song Sales chart.

Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what's on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.

This week, WHTZ (Z100) New York program director Mark Medina stops by to discuss what makes the iHeartMedia outlet the most-listened-to top 40 radio station in the U.S. Especially in 2017, with more competition than ever before, how can radio continue to thrive? "Radio remains very relevant in new music discovery," Medina says. Plus: "The advantage of radio, as I see it, is the personalities. The human touch. The connection that we can make [with] a listener that a streaming service can't. When you want to plug in and engage with the world and interact and feel like you're part of the community, that's where the live aspect of radio comes in. That's the beauty of what we have."

Gary and Trevor also look at star acts that came close to dominating Billboard's Digital Song Sales chart the way that Justin Bieber does this week, as he becomes the first artist ever to rank at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 simultaneously. Bieber holds atop the list as featured on Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" and at No. 2 as a guest on DJ Khaled's "I'm the One," while debuting at No. 3 as the featured artist on David Guetta's new single "2U."

Wrapping up the podcast, Gary and Trevor travel back to the just before the start of the millennium … to Millennium, as this week in 1999 Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" was ruling Billboard charts. This week, the band adds to its legacy and one-ups N*SYNC, as BSB rise to No. 2 on Country Airplay as featured on Florida Georgia Line's "God, Your Mama, And Me." The rank tops the No. 3 peak of N*SYNC's featured turn (also in 1999) on Alabama's country cover of the group's own "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You."
