Sia's "Alive" - Single Review

Australian singer-songwriter Sia already had a thriving career in Australia and was slowly gaining traction in the United States with five studio albums and successful collaborations with David Guetta under her belt, however, when lead 1000 Forms of Fear single "Chandelier" was released in early 2014, everything changed. The addictive single became a top 10 hit, received four GRAMMY nominations, and the parent album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. Not too bad.

For her seventh full length album, This Is Acting, the mysterious pop artist chose to release a collection of tracks originally written for other artists, telling stories through their perspective. The first taste of the new project comes in the form of "Alive", a track co-written for British powerhouse Adele. No word as to why the track did not make the final cut for Adele's highly anticipated third studio album, but safe to say, it's a good thing it stayed with Sia.

"Alive" wastes no time in becoming the powerful and electrifying type of emotional ballad we've come to expect from the "Elastic Heart" songstress. Besides her mesmerizing vocal performance where she stretches her vocals out as far as possible, giving even Adele a run for her money, the strength of the new single lies in the conviction of the delivery and the captivating, slow build until the radio-dominating chorus finally bursts through.

Upon first listen, people will definitely hear the lyrical resemblance to previous Adele tracks, as well as Sia's signature songwriting touch. The artist powers through content that speaks of constantly facing difficult obstacles and getting knocked down, but still finding the will and that last breath to get back up. "I knew what I wanted, I went in and got it, did all the things that you said that I wouldn't, I told you that I would never be forgotten, and all in spite of you," the artist boldly belts.

Individuals may have gotten tired of Sia's anti-marketing tactics, but there's no denying that the artist can sing and craft an infectious, empowering, pop-leaning track. "Alive" has all the pieces to make it a future chart topper. With Adele, it could have swept the GRAMMYs and stayed at the top position for weeks, but it sounds right, more sincere, coming from Sia. It's a strong, uplifting ballad that you can't escape. You won't really want to.

Information on This Is Acting is coming out slowly. Hearing "Alive" in finished form, and knowing it was intended for the great Adele, quenches the thirst for new Sia material even better. What do you think of the newly released single?
