UPDATE: Due to the track's unexpected/expected success, Lady Gaga and Interscope Records have put plans for "Venus" on hold to officially release "Do What U Want" as ARTPOP's second single! No promo-only here!
Ass, ass, ass, ass, ass! After flaunting her tight, perfect bum during her epic MTV VMA performance of "Applause" back in August, ARTPOP songstress Lady Gaga decided it was her fit derriere that would make the perfect image for her promotional single's, "Do What U Want" feat. R. Kelly, cover art. It even had me drooling... Give me the thing that I love!
Following the revealing of a short snippet of the new teaser track in Best Buy's Beats by Dre commercial, Gaga unleashed the R&B-infused ARTPOP track early this morning in all its glory, where it has already hit the top spot on the iTunes charts. I smell an official single release somewhere down the road. The new track is a smooth, sexual experiment where the artist is shaking off her haters and negative comments over the last few years with the help of duet partner R. Kelly, whose vocals pair nicely with the "Poker Face" singer. With production that bares some similarities to "Hold On, We're Going Home" by Drake, "Do What U Want" could possibly be one of Lady Gaga's simplistic, yet still excellent, creations to date.
From the opening 80s-sounding, electronic beats to Gaga's breathtaking crooning, the promotional single has everything you have come to expect from a Gaga masterpiece. With the first few vocal notes, all eyes are on Miss Gaga (sorry Britney). Lyrics such as "you can't have my voice, cuz you don't own my life, but do what you want with my body" serve as a message to the artist's critics while doubling as a sexually-charged bedroom jam where R. Kelly, despite all his recent troubles, does a pretty damn good job at luring Gaga with his charm.
"Do What U Want" is definitely showcasing that Gaga is having fun in the studio with her middle finger raised high in the air. Who cares about the critics? Certainly not the Lady. As Gaga screams, belts, and just plain sings the hell out of the new song which reminds me of "So Happy I Could Die" off The Fame Monster, if it is was transported back to when synth-pop was dominating, it becomes clear that the artist is coming back with a vengeance... and the diva-ness sounds oh so heavenly.
While I'm sure critics will attack some of the song's provocative, slightly controversial, lyrics... how are they any different from let's say those found on Robin Thicke's summer hit "Blurred Lines"? At least Gaga is giving consent to her man before he lays his hands on her. But that's just a small part of the overall message. Dig deeper, as you have to do with any Gaga song, and you find that this seductive, addictive jam is the artist "roaring" back, showing that the applause her fans give her is well deserved.
